An idea we're not sure about: doodle fields
Every field TinyForm has today assumes the answer is text, a number, a date, or a choice from a list. That covers most forms fine. But some questions don’t really fit any of those shapes:
- Where does it hurt?
- Where would you put the sofa?
- Circle what’s confusing about this screenshot.
- Mark where you noticed the damage.
For all of these, the natural answer isn’t a sentence — it’s a finger pointing at a spot on a picture. That’s the seed of the idea: a doodle field. The form owner uploads a background image (a floor plan, a diagram, a photo), and the person filling out the form draws or marks directly on top of it. The drawing itself is the answer.
We went a lot further down this path in our own notes than we’re actually planning to build. Doodling as an input method turns out to stretch into some genuinely interesting territory — intensity instead of a slider (“scribble how stressed you are”), mood instead of an emoji picker, even relationship diagrams and voting. Fun to think about, but most of that is a different, much bigger product than a form builder with one new field type.
So the actual scope under consideration is narrow and boring on purpose: one field type, an uploaded image, a canvas on top of it, mouse or touch, a clear/undo button. The drawing gets attached to the submission the same way an uploaded file does — never stored, just emailed to you.
What we’re not sure about:
- Whether this solves a real, recurring problem for people building forms, or whether it’s a fun idea that doesn’t get used much once it exists.
- Whether a drawn answer on a phone screen is actually pleasant to produce, or just fiddly.
- Whether it’s worth the added complexity in the builder and the fill page for something that might end up being a rarely-picked field type.
No commitment either way yet. Putting it here mostly to think out loud — if you’d actually use something like this, tell us.
